Add link to title of widget text, or any widgets

Sometimes you want to add link to the Widget Title. Using “widget_title” filter you want do that. Below is a simple way to do that. Let’s start with the code

So the “widget_title” filter accepts 3 parameters. The first one is the current title, the second one contains all parameters of the widget. The last one helps us to recognize what type of widget it is. So, we check

$id_base == 'text'

to make sure you only want to apply on Text Widget. Actually this check is not necessary if you don’t care about this. Next, we check which title should be added link. This will be tricky if you have different widgets having same title. Make sure widgets have different titles, so the link only be added to one widget.

Finally, we add link to the title. This solution is not perfect, but simple and fast enough to be used.

Setting to Leverage Browser Caching on GoDaddy Hosting doesn’t work

You may all know how to set expired headers for static files using .htaccess file. There are a lot of tutorial online. The purpose is to tell browser to cache static content, such as CSS, JS or image files, for a period of time. By doing that, browsers do not have to query the files again, thus decrease loading time of a page. Google PageSpeed Insights measures this parameter and give you bad rate if you do not utilize this setting.

Basically, your .htaccess file should have this content

However, it may not work if you use GoDaddy Hosting. Due to various default settings of GoDaddy, they disable many features and you cannot change via .htaccess. To make above settings work, you can add this on top of the .htaccess file

Well yes, you have to disable Etag Header setting for static content, and turn on pagespeed_mobule. I’m sure that will help you to increase Google PageSpeed Insight grade.

WooCommerce 2.5.5 slows your site dramatically?

WooCommerce 2.5.5 slows your site, doesn’t it?

If you recently update WooCommerce 2.5.5 and you see that your site loads super slow, here’s what to check. The phenomenon is when you visit the site as guests, it loads slowly. If you login and try again, it works normally.

Go to WooCommerce Settings page > tag General > General Options > Default Custom Address

Check if this setting is set to Geolocate. When users (mostly guests) do checkout, WooCommerce will try to detect customer’s location using MaxMind GeoLite Database. If this feature doesn’t work well, it will effect your site response. So, try to change Default Custom Address to “No Address”.

Latest version WordPress 4.5 will be released in April, 2016

WordPress team is planning to release the latest version 4.5 in April, 2016. It will be named after a Jazz musician, whose name has not been mentioned yet. For end-users, there are 4 worth-mentioning points:

  1. Image generation works more efficiently.They promise that image thumbnails will be smaller as uneccessary meta will be removed. You can save up to 50% storage while keeping same quality
  2. Visual Editor is improved

    Not much information about this, but there are two more shortcuts which allow you to insert code and a <hr/> tag faster

    • Use `your code` to transform <code>my code</code>
    • Use --- to transform <hr />

    In addition, inline Link Editting allows you to insert link without opening a popup

  3. Customizer is improved too

    The most significant feature is that you have the ability to preview your site in different screen sizes, so you can check if the theme works well in mobiles or tablets.

    In addition, although in Tweenty Sixteen theme, you have seen the logo upload feature. However, in WordPress 4.5 this feature is added by default.

  4. Comment form is refined

    Just a little change in the feature. The comment form now enforces the maximum length of each field and the Comment Moderate Screen is refined.

For developers, there aren’t many changes. Backbone and Underscore libraries are updated to latest version. Embed templates are splitted into parts and the term edit page changes (wp-admin/term.php is introduced). So I guess they don’t have to update their themes much.
